Biography

This late 60s British pop quintet, which took its name (respelled) from Thackeray's famous novel, comprised: Dick Allix (3 May 1945, Gravesend, Kent, England; drums), Trevor Brice (b. 12 February 1945, Rochester, Kent, England; vocals), Tony Goulden (b. 21 November 1944, Rochester, Kent, England; guitar), Tony Jarrett (b. 4 September 1944; double bass and guitar) and Barry Landeman (b. 25 October 1947, Woodbridge, Suffolk, England; keyboards). Managed by Roger Easterby and signed to Larry Page's Page One label, the clean-cut Vanity Fare hit the UK Top 20 in the summer of 1968 with the appropriately titled "I Live For The Sun". It was almost a year and another summer before they returned to the charts with "Early In The Morning", this time abandoning their suits in favour of neckerchiefs and Carnaby Street garb. Although they claimed they could only chart in summer, their final success, "Hitchin' A Ride", was a surprise festive hit.
