Biography

Primarily known today as one of soul singer Lou Rawls' first groups, the close-harmony group the Pilgrim Travelers was formed in 1936 in Houston, Texas, USA, as an offshoot of the Pleasantgrove Baptist Church. The founder members were Joe Johnson and Willie Davis, with later recruits including Kylo Turner, Keith Barber and Raphael Taylor. They won a talent contest in 1944, the prize for which was a national tour with the Soul Stirrers. After the tour the group moved to Los Angeles, California, and added J.W. Alexander as tenor, and Jessie Whitaker as baritone. After brief spells with Big Town and Swing Time, the Pilgrim Travelers moved to Specialty Records in the late 40s. In addition to gospel standards such as "The Old Rugged Cross", their most fondly remembered track from this period was "Jesus Met The Woman At The Well".
