Biography

Key players in the bubblegum-pop trend of the late 60s, the Ohio Express evolved from the Mansfield, Ohio, USA-based unit Rare Breed in 1967. The band comprised Joey Levine (vocals), Dale Powers (guitar), Doug Grassel (rhythm guitar), Jim Pflayer (keyboards), Dean Krastan (bass) and Tim Corwin (drums). Their first single, "Beg, Borrow And Steal", had originally been recorded by the group under its old moniker in 1966 before it was reissued the following year by Cameo Records. There the band teamed up with producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, and reached number 29 in the autumn of 1967. A second Cameo single to chart was "Try It", a song penned by Levine that was later covered by the Standells. In 1968 the Ohio Express signed with Neil Bogart's Buddah Records and released the bubblegum "Yummy Yummy Yummy", which became their biggest hit, reaching the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic.
